Graduate Course in Japanese Literature (Master's Course)

This specialized course is designed to help students further expand their knowledge and become able to play an active role on the international stage as sophisticated educators and researchers.
In order to realize that goal, we designed a practical curriculum that not only provides a high degree of specialized knowledge but also effective instruction in Japanese history, culture, and philosophy, as well as Chinese literature and art history. Furthermore, we offer comprehensive courses that integrate the results of research in the fields of Japanese language studies (including Japanese language education), Japanese literature, and Japanese Kanbun literature(Classical Chinese), supporting the acquisition of innovative research perspectives. Students who have completed the course are widely active in Japan and abroad.

  • 1.In Japanese language studies, students research the Japanese language from historical and systematic perspectives. The program focuses on research that places an emphasis on the relationships between Kanji (Chinese characters), Kanji readings, Kango (Chinese words), and Kanbun studies, bibliographic history of Japanese language that incorporates bibliographical methods, and the elucidation of the actual state of modern day Japanese.
  • 2.In Japanese literature studies, both research into a broad range of literary history encompassing everything from the ancient past to modern times as well as research to understand the special characteristics of each era are conducted. To this end, the program also includes (the) research emphasizing traditional annotation, and incorporates the broad perspectives of philology, hermeneutic, comparative literature, and structural theory.
  • 3.By incorporating the approach of Japanese language education into Japanese language studies, we aim to extend the area of study not only from diachronic perspectives but also from synchronic perspectives.
  • 4.By incorporating the approach of Japanese Kanbun studies, we aim to extend the area of study in Japanese literature. Also, comparative literature research comparing Japanese literature with Chinese literature is conducted.
  • 5.The program is designed to acquire new research perspectives through the comprehensive study incorporating the research results of Japanese language, Japanese literature, and Japanese Kanbun studies. Also, special lectures are held pertaining to the related fields of Japanese history, bibliography, aesthetics, art history, and Chinese literature, placing an emphasis on a broad cultural history perspective.
