Master’s Program for Language and Culture

     The Master’s Program for Language and Culture consists of 2 courses: the Division of Japanese Language and Culture and the Division of English Language and Culture (in English speaking regions). Students are to gain a deep understanding of the knowledge regarding the rich linguistic and literary cultures of Japan and English-speaking regions, as well as acquire a comparative research perspective newly formulated from a global point of view.

Division of Japanese Language and Culture

     The subject of research is Japanese culture with a strong focus on Japanese language, literature and history. Students are to get a different perspective from the conventional Japanese literature study, including interdisciplinary and comparative literature methods, while at the same time they conduct comprehensive research on a wide variety of complex facets of Japanese culture. The program intends to nurture graduates who will play an active role in the area of cultural exchange and education with the intellect to comparatively interpret the global society and with the expert knowledge to spread Japanese culture to the rest of the world.

Division of English Language and Culture (in English speaking regions)

     Based on Western European cultural history, students are to increase their synchronic and diachronic knowledge about linguistic culture, society and thought mainly of the English speaking regions. At the same time, they also learn several theories to critically read and interpret words and visual culture, and cultivate the abilities to analyze and solve linguistic and cultural issues so that they may make cultural contributions to the global society from Asia. Students’ linguistic and interactive abilities are also improved to persuasively articulate or propose their own analysis and ideas to the local and the global community.
