Graduate Course in English Literature (the first half of the Doctor’s Course)

This graduate course also aims to develop educators and researchers who can be active on the international stage. To this end, we provide a curriculum that can cultivate a high degree of communication ability while increasing specialized knowledge pertaining to English/American literature, and English language/culture. Also, the program offers flexible course hours to meet the needs of adult learners or in-service teachers.
The research of many of our graduate students has been published in prestigious academic journals. As a result, many of those who have completed the program are involved in educational research as either full-time or part-time instructors at higher educational institutions such as senior high schools and universities.

  • 1.By dividing instructors by the genre of poems, novels, plays, and literary theory, we help students enrich their understanding of literature in a comprehensive and sophisticated manner while responding to diversifying areas of specialization.
  • 2.In order to give students a clear understanding of the specific qualities of English/American literature in the entire course of history, lectures are held covering a broad range of eras for each genre.
  • 3.We conduct diachronic education and research encompassing everything from old to modern English using a syntactical approach, and foster a deep understanding of the English language as well as broad perspectives of the culture of the English language.
  • 4.In addition to fostering multifaceted perspectives on literature and linguistics as well as an understanding of the diverse research methods, we conduct joint research involving multiple full-time faculty members in order to enhance students’ comprehensive understanding of literary works and help them bring new perspectives and originality into their research.

Graduate Course in English Literature (the second half of the Doctor’s Course)

The goal of this program is to cultivate superior researchers who can compare favorably with their western counterparts by further strengthening the expertise of the work and incorporating interdisciplinary perspectives, all based on the English and American literature and English language studies of the first stage of the doctoral course.

This curriculum is characterized by its three types of courses: research seminar supervised by the individual instructor, joint research conducted by a number of full-time faculty, and comprehensive seminar in which all full-time faculty and all later stage doctoral course students participate. Based on the abundant knowledge cultivated in those classes, students set up a detailed research plan starting in their first year and running through the completion of their doctoral thesis, and to this end write academic dissertations every year.
