Faculty of Human Environment of Sciences – Department of Environmental Science
Special characteristics and educational goals of the department

Our pursuit of comfort and convenience has led to today’s prosperity, but we are consuming natural resources and destroying and polluting our environment. Representative examples of this include global warming and the pollution of the environment with toxic substances. Understanding the mechanism of environmental change brought on by human living and learning about the impact these environmental changes have on living things is very important to our future as well.
This department investigates problems mainly concerning the regional environment centered on Fukuoka Prefecture and aims to make contributions to the regional community. We also help students acquire general knowledge pertaining to environment science and develop the ability to make a scientific analysis of environmental problems.
Through two courses – the physical science course and biological science course - we conduct specialized education consisting of education and research pertaining to the mechanism behind environmental changes and the impact of environmental change on living organisms.
In this specialized education, students can acquire fundamental skills which are in high demand in current society, such as environmental chemical analysis, computer programming, and biotechnology, and this also opens the path to acquiring qualifications such as those needed to become a certified environmental measurer or an information processing technician. Moreover, we provide a curriculum for acquiring a junior and senior high school teacher’s license (science).
