Undergraduate and Graduate

International College of Arts and Sciences Department of Environmental Science

Guiding students to comprehend the diversity of the cultures of Asia and the rest of the world as well as enabling them to play an active role on the international stage.

The world is currently facing serious global challenges. Our aim is to educate students to be able to understand these problems from a scientific point of view and to enable them to contribute to the creation of a society that is environmentally friendly and sustainable. In order to achieve this, students need to think about the linkage between society and environment from many points of view. A course group of four courses set up per academic discipline has been: Environmental Substances (chemistry), Life and Environment (biology), Lifestyle and the Environment (life science) and International Environmental Policies (politico-economical studies). The students will choose their study course depending on their interests and will earn specialized knowledge and techniques. Furthermore, students will develop a flexible way of thinking and practical skills (general abilities to handle environmental problems) from what they learn in other accredited courses.

List of accredited courses

Environmental Substances

To develop the ability to evaluate and understand the characteristics of chemical substances in the environment, and to analyze environmental problems chemically, are the aims of this course. It might lead to a career in the field of chemical analysis (working for companies that have a need of environmental measurements or pollution prevention management; companies that implement environmental analysis) or a career in the field of environmental analysis (working for companies connected to water drainage processes)

Life and Environment

Knowledge is provided about how environmental changes due to the composition and function of living organisms and human activity influence the ecosystem or human health. This course points to a career in fields that involve biotechnology, such as agriculture, food production or pharmaceutical manufacture (working for companies tied to agriculture, food-processing or the pharmaceutical industry) or in areas related to environmental conservation (companies related to environmental conservation or tree planting or companies that perform environmental impact assessment).

Lifestyle and the Environment

These courses focus on the interaction of people's lifestyles with both domestic and foreign social and natural environments. Students are likely to follow a career path in the areas of environmental systems (working for companies tied to ecosystem development: environmental global assessment or consulting firms; energy related businesses; companies involved in recycling) or alternatively in areas of living environment design (working for organizations related to air conditioning, illumination or life space).

International Environmental Policies

Aiming to construct an environment-conscious society, students need to develop analytical skills that can propose domestic and foreign environmental policies, general intellectual powers and abilities to analyze environmental issues from an economic point of view. Attractive future possibilities for students are in the field of environmental policy (countries, prefectures, districts, organizations, etc., that need the acquisition or maintenance of environmental certificates, such as ISO), planning-related fields (working for companies' planning administration and management sections) and companies related to environmental business or environment-related NPOs and NGOs that can operate in Japan and abroad.
