My research focuses on the films of Alfred Hitchcock and the texts (including novels, short stories, and stage plays) those films are based on.

研究概要

In achieving my MA degree from SUNY Albany, I took a special interest in the works of William Faulkner, Joseph Conrad, and Alfred Hitchcock, and in the philosophies and theories of Ferdinand de Saussure and Jacques Lacan. My current research focuses on adaptations, especially films directed by Alfred Hitchcock which have been adapted from novels or short stories. Viewing these films in light of their literary sources can provide new insights and perspectives on both film and text. In my PhD dissertation, “Webs of Signification in Hitchcock’s Adaptations: An Analysis of Interconnecting Tropes in The Lodger and Vertigo,” I analyzed the Hitchcock films The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) and Vertigo (1958) alongside their respective source texts (The Lodger by Marie Belloc Lowndes and D’entre les morts by Pierre Boileau and Thomas Narcejac). In this dissertation, the source texts of each film were investigated in order to explicate the differences and continuities between film and novel, as well as to better understand the ways that The Lodger and Vertigo relate to one another. Currently, I am analyzing Hitchcock’s 1929 film, Blackmail, in relation to the stage play on which it is based, paying particular attention to the ways that geographic movements and dialogue signify in both source text and adaptation. My research is not limited to film and literature, however. I have also investigated the ways that video games, specifically Detroit: Become Human (2018), relates to and is influenced by other, more classic literary works, such as Karel Čapek's 1920 stage play, R.U.R.
