Department of English Literature

The more internationalized our society becomes, the more important it will be to learn English and American literature at university, for the experience enhances students’ ability to judge what is happening in the world and gives them chances to consider how individuals should live in their communities. With a view to developing students’ abilities to participate actively in an international society in the future, teaching staff in our department help students to learn basic skills of English communication through classes in speech, debate, TOEIC/TOEFL preparation, and English in the media. These programs enable them to understand English grammar thoroughly and to improve their ability to use English. In addition, opportunities to read Western literature and consider issues concerning history, culture and language in English provide them with chances to understand how Westerners live their lives and how they see the world, thus developing knowledge and skills essential to their future lives in Japan.
Students with such practical skills will be able to communicate effectively whatever needs to be said. To fulfill this goal, we have provided a systematically organized curriculum to foster a broad knowledge of the world’s politics, economy, history, literature, languages and cultures.
