For Graduate Students

Here at Fukuoka Women’s University we have graduate classes leading to both the MA and the Doctorate.  Grad students participate in small seminar classes, often leading the discussion themselves under the guidance of the professor.  Each student is free to study a topic independently for a thesis or dissertation, but in addition we all read and discuss a wide range of books, primarily literary theory and modern fiction in my classes.

For instance, in recent discussions we have focused on White Noise and The Body Artist, two outstanding works by the writer Don DeLillo, thought by many to be America’s best current writer.  This year, we will also read works by Paul Auster and other active novelists, in order to understand what postmodern literature and culture are. But as a basis for all our study we will learn about literary theory, surveying such approaches as narrative theory, postcolonialism, gender studies, phenomenological criticism, and cultural studies.

Graduate students are encouraged and assisted in independent literary research, and they often write articles for publication or give paper presentations at conferences.  Our grad students go on to become professors, teachers, librarians, counselors, or translators, for instance.  For many, graduate school is a rare and exciting chance to read and think deeply and then share ideas and opinions with others who love language and literature.
