Academic Interests

Word origins and word histories are what interest me most, and I hope to share my enthusiasm for these fields of study with students at this university. Take the word study , for example. Did you know that it comes from Latin studium , which – first and foremost – means “enthusiasm”?

In addition to my full-time duties as a professor at this university, I work by e-mail as a consultant to the editors of the Oxford English Dictionary. They are in the process of revising the entire dictionary and publishing it online. My job is to check items which have Japanese connections, and suggest improvements if I can. Entries I have worked on include anime , bushido, cosplay, Godzilla, manga, nunchaku, oshibori, ponzu, quality circle, Rashomon, shiitake, and Tamagotchi – a fascinating reflection of Japanese influences on English, don’t you think? Please check them out if you get the chance!

Other Interests

My childhood experience of growing up in East Africa and the South Pacific (on account of my father’s work) gave me a lifelong love of travel. After graduating from Oxford University , I joined Servas, an international friendship network, and set off on a trip round the United States and Latin America . Since first coming to Japan , I have also made trips to the Philippines , Korea , China , and South-East Asia . Up to the present, I have lived and worked in nine countries, and visited another forty-five or so. Naturally, I take a keen interest in current affairs, to keep myself up-to-date with what is happening in the many places where people have befriended me.

Here in Fukuoka , whenever I get the chance, I go cycling with friends round the seaside and along the rivers of this beautiful area. It’s great exercise, but on the other hand, we’re quite happy that the land round here is mostly nice and flat!
